Took another trip down to the Bolsa Chica Reserve on my off 9/80 Friday. I've been looking at either the 1.4x or the 1.7x converter to go with my 300mm F4 AFS. The 1.4x would give me 420mm and the 1.7x would give me 510mm. I borrowed my dads 1.7x to test out. With the loss of light, I had to keep my ISO fairly high to keep my shutter speed around 1/1000s because it was an overcast day. The auto-focus wasn't responding too well, and needed to be manually focused to a close enough range before the auto focus would kick in.
I managed to get a few pictures, mostly of some Hummingbirds that were hanging around the area.
The additional reach was nice and I didn't really notice any quality issues. I think I will end up getting the 1.4x to go with my 300mm F4 which would give me a 420mm f/5.6 lens.
