Trona Pinnacles sunset

When I said sunset Saturday night was amazing I wasn’t lying. The spires looking out in this direction weren’t the highest, but the textures in the clouds and the intense burn made me frame this one. I also liked the road leading through the tufa spires along with the scattered campers giving this a sense of scale. I wanted a different vantage so I climbed up high to get this bird’s eye view of the area. Was bummed that the clouds were too thick to see the MW but by no means did I come home empty handed. This place is like mono lake on steroids. Nikon D750, Nikkor 24-120, f/8, 0.6 sec, ISO-50

Sunset in a Palos Verdes seacave

I shot this a while back but only recently processed it. I think I skipped over it because the dynamic range between the bright sky and dark cave was more than I was able to blend back then to make it look natural. The cave was pretty dark as this was after sunset when the afterburn lit up the sky. Luminosity masks allowed me to get this blended the way I wanted to. Nikon D750, Nikkor 20mm 1.8, f/8, ISO-400, multiple exposures.

Malibu foggy car trails

Happy Friday everyone. Here are some fog trails from Malibu. The fog was at the perfect height so that the street lights were shining through nicely. The rest of the scene is darker to let those lights be the star. Nikon D750, Nikkor 70-200, f/8, 15 sec, ISO-250

Cathedrals Reflection - Yosemite National Park

When we went to Yosemite, there was a bit of water overflow on the roads and puddles galore from the recent storms. I can’t imagine what the park looks like after they re-opened it after the flood. Must be reflection heaven. Nikon D750, Nikkor 14-24, f/16, 1/8 sec, ISO-50

Manzanar watch tower and Milky Way

Here’s a quick snap of the MW over the Manzanar watch tower from last season. We stopped here before entering the grounds and shooting the memorial under the stars. This was just a quick single exposure with passing cars helping to light up the tower. Nikon D750, Nikkor 14-24, f/2.8, 20 sec, ISO-6400

Los Angeles sunrise from Kenneth Hahn Park

Happy new week. Here are 2 clouds that decided to hang around and light up at sunrise. Taken at 300mm to get that compression of the skyline and Mt. Baldy.

Milky Way over Hot Creek - Mammoth Lakes CA

Here’s one from my past weekend trip kicking off my MW season. I always loved this view where you can catch algae in Hot Creek. You can’t catch this position of the MW in the winter months tho so it’s composited. The MW used for this shot was shot during the am twilight hours and then the foreground was shot about 30 minutes later as it got brighter. I used my CPL to cut through the water surface to reveal the algae. This line up can be caught during the summer/fall months however I wanted this shot with the huge dump of snow on the Sierras. The actual position of the MW around this time is hugging the left side of this frame so not too much longer until it starts lining up from here and the standard hot creek viewpoint.

Foggy Yosemite trees

I love how fog can change within the minute and create different moods. It’s cool when the fog is sitting real thick and low but it’s also sweet catching it when it starts to lift and thin out. I caught this one as the fog started lifting before it engulfed us completely. Nikon D750, Nikkor 70-200, f/14, ½ sec, ISO-50

Los Angeles stormy sunrise

Here’s a look at LA after one of our recent past storms. Love how it just clears the air making everything nice and crisp. Make it a good week. Nikon D750, Nikkor 70-200, f/11, 1.3 sec, ISO-50
